With its newest business division, ReCover, and an industry-leading recycling process, packaging manufacturer Coveris converts printed film into high-quality recyclate, closing the plastic loop. This sustainable production process won the prestigious Green Packaging Star Award at the FachPack trade fair in Nuremberg yesterday.
Coveris' ReCover won the Green Packaging Star Award in the 'Environmentally Friendly Production Process' category. As part of its 'No Waste' sustainability strategy, which won the Green Packaging Star Award two years ago, the packaging manufacturer has already set itself the goal of eliminating waste of all kinds. The ReCover division, established at the end of 2022, brings together the company's recycling activities and ensures that plastic is kept in the cycle with a pioneering recycling process.
Pioneering recycling process
At the heart of ReCover is Coveris' industry-leading de-inking technology. When printed films are granulated, the recycling result is not optimal. This is because ink residues automatically result in a lower quality recyclate. Achieving a top quality result therefore requires solutions that prevent the recyclate from being contaminated with ink. ReCover enables the production of such recyclate (called ReGen) from production waste, which is a sustainable alternative to virgin raw materials and can be reprocessed into packaging film without loss of quality.
Green Packaging Star Award
The Green Packaging Star Award is presented by the trade magazine Kompack and the Austrian Research Institute for Chemistry. Since 2008, the award has recognised outstanding sustainable packaging solutions. Innovative, environmentally friendly products, company philosophies and production processes are awarded in four categories. The aim is to highlight and promote sustainable improvements in the packaging industry and operational processes. The awards ceremony took place at this year's FachPack in Nuremberg, Germany, from 24 to 26 September.
"Winning the Green Packaging Star Award is a fantastic acknowledgement of our innovative strength and ongoing commitment to sustainable production. In line with our 'No Waste' strategy, we have established ReCover as a new business unit that bundles all plastic recycling. In doing so, we are making a valuable contribution to the circular economy," says Katja Killian, Business Development Director at Coveris. “I would also like to emphasise that this award recognises a team effort. Without our outstanding team, ReCover would not have been possible.”
