Leading European packaging manufacturer Coveris is set to showcase its sustainable and recyclable packaging of the future at Packaging Innovations. Taking place from 25 – 26 May 2022 at the NEC, Birmingham, Packaging Innovations is the UK’s leading industry event for the packaging supply chain.
Coveris, a manufacturer of award-winning paper and plastic packaging solutions, has a No Waste sustainability strategy targeting no product waste, no packaging waste and no operational waste. Aligned with its vision for No Waste, Coveris’ forward-thinking innovation focusses on increased use of recycled content, packaging recyclability, sustainable sourcing and product lifecycle protection.
Innovation in paper-based packaging
Launching at Packaging Innovations 2022, Coveris’ HeatSeal cartonboard trays are recyclable, sustainably sourced and achieve a premium look and feel. Providing an alternative to plastic, HeatSeal trays can support brands and retailers with plastic packaging reduction and sustainability objectives. Developed for use with heat-sealed lidding film, a key feature of the trays are pre-broken, pre-folded flanges which enables accurate and efficient film sealing during the packing process. HeatSeal trays are fully printable on the outer face of the packaging and suitable applications include whole head produce, food-to-go and convenience products such mushrooms, asparagus, sausage rolls and cocktail sausages that do not require a hermetic seal.
Forward-thinking developments in recyclable plastic
Using extensive film science and food science technology capabilities, Coveris will also showcase its pioneering range of MonoFlex monomaterial laminates, a significant development in recyclable consumer plastic packaging. Providing a direct replacement for non-recyclable or difficult-to-recycle plastics, Coveris’ MonoFlex packaging has been developed to maintain product shelf life, performance, functionality and packing efficiency.
MonoFlexBE, a polyethylene (PE) monolaminate structure with built-in barrier properties launched with Tesco for its own-brand grated cheese range. The switch to MonoFlexBE from a mixed, triple-ply nylon laminate enables circa 411 tonnes of plastics to enter a recycling stream annually. MonoFlexBE has now launched with a further two UK retailers for grated cheese lines in 2022.
Demonstrating its success in ambient and pet food markets, Coveris has supported retailer Aldi switch two rice SKUs and its Earls brand 10kg and 12kg dog food lines to MonoFlexE, a polyethylene (PE) monolaminate, from previous mixed laminate packaging. Coveris’ MonoFlex packaging formats include pouches, form, fill, seal (FFS) films and premade bags.
