Rebecca Collier

Laboratory Supervisor

We’re celebrating the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2025 by shining a spotlight on some of our female employees in science and technology-based roles. Get to know Rebecca Collier, Laboratory Supervisor at Coveris Winsford, our UK centre of excellence for innovative barrier and stretch film extrusion, in this insightful and inspiring interview.

Since joining in 2021, Rebecca has been part of our Film Science Lab team, responsible for analysis, formulation optimisation and validation in the development of our sustainable film packaging. Supporting her career progression, Rebecca recently completed a Management Development Programme for Coveris employees.

Can you tell us about your role and main responsibilities?

Within the Film Science Lab, my main responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing daily operations and ensuring efficient production and testing.
  • Maintaining equipment and enforcing safety protocols.
  • Quality control, process optimisation, and troubleshooting production issues.
  • Ensuring compliance with industry standards and maintaining accurate documentation.

Ultimately, my role ensures the production of high-quality, sustainable plastic films that meet customer and safety requirements.

What was your path to working in science and technology?

I have always had a strong interest in both science and technology, which naturally led me to pursue a career in the field. While I did not attend university, my passion for the subject and hands-on experience in various scientific environments drove me to develop practical skills and expertise.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I most enjoy the hands-on nature of the work and the opportunity to apply both science and technology to solve real-world problems. Additionally, my involvement in the innovation side of the business is a key aspect that I find rewarding; the opportunity to experiment with different materials, techniques, and technologies allows me to contribute to the continuous improvement of products.

What is your favourite thing about working at Coveris?

My favourite thing about Coveris is the strong focus on growth and development, particularly the opportunities for internal promotion. This commitment to promoting from within creates a positive and supportive work environment, where I can see my contributions directly impact both my personal career trajectory and the overall success of the company.

Can you tell us about your experience as a female working in science/technology?
My experience has been both rewarding and challenging. I have developed resilience and confidence while navigating the complexities of a traditionally male-dominated field, and I have not experienced disrespect by my colleagues at any point in my career. Over time, I have seen firsthand how the industry is becoming less biased, with more focus on capability and expertise than gender.

Any words of advice to someone considering a career in this field?
My advice would be to stay confident in your abilities and never shy away from challenges. Science and technology are fields that thrive on innovation and diverse perspectives, so your unique viewpoint is valuable. Don't be afraid to ask questions or seek help when needed. And lastly, believe in yourself and your potential, as the industry is evolving to become more inclusive and supportive of women in all areas of science and technology.

A big thank you for sharing your story and inspiring others on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Rebecca!
